Castle Leslie, Co. Monaghan – Criostoir’s Review

Criostoir Certified Score 90/100

First Impressions: 9/10

“A warm welcome from the moment you arrive, with grandeur that leaves a lasting impression.”

I stayed in the Lodge of the Castle, Castle Leslie’s lodge offers a welcoming and intimate first impression, I imagine there is a stark contrast in feel of the accommodation when compared to staying in the main castle itself. Located next to the stables, the lodge exudes a cozy yet grand charm from the moment you walk through the door. Its period property and rustic surroundings add to the unique appeal. While the castle would give an even more awe-inspiring first impression, the lodge does an excellent job of capturing that cosy luxury on a smaller scale.

Location: 8/10

“An idyllic and peaceful retreat, though a bit distant from major cities.”

Castle Leslie is nestled in the heart of Monaghan, two hours from Dublin and one hour from Belfast. While its location might not be the most convenient for those looking for proximity to larger towns, it’s a perfect retreat for nature lovers. The estate itself, with scenic walks around lakes and forests, offers tranquility, and the nearby village of Glaslough is a charming spot for a peaceful stroll or meal. The equestrian experience also enhances the sense of being transported into a different world, making the slightly remote location a non-issue for most.

Check-In Experience: 8/10

“A smooth and welcoming process that feels personal and boutique.”

Check-in was efficient and friendly, with the staff going out of their way to ensure we felt at home. The small number of rooms in the lodge helps maintain a more intimate, personalised experience compared to larger corporate hotels. The staff took the time to explain the estate’s amenities and make sure we were oriented, which added to the overall welcoming atmosphere.

Room Quality: 9/10

“A beautiful, comfortable room with a unique equestrian connection.”

The room was beautifully appointed, blending historical charm with modern comforts. The major draw I loved was we stayed in a room above the stables, offering an unforgettable view and close proximity to the horses, which was a delight for any horse lover. The room’s period features and spacious layout provided a luxurious yet understated feel. The only downside would be the lack of more traditional amenities, but for those who enjoy the equestrian theme and the charm of a period property, the room exceeded expectations.

Facilities and Services: 7/10

“A focus on equestrian activities and historical charm, with limited traditional amenities.”

Castle Leslie offers an immersive experience in its grand surroundings and equestrian offerings. While there are limited traditional hotel facilities such as a gym, pool, or spa, the estate’s focus on nature walks, horse riding, and its historical setting make it an ideal retreat for those looking for a quieter, more specialised experience. The lack of typical amenities might leave some guests feeling a bit limited, but for lovers of horses and historic homes, it’s the perfect getaway.

Food and Beverages: 9/10

“A truly memorable dining experience that showcases the best of local flavours.”

The dining options at Castle Leslie were exceptional. We had the pleasure of experiencing both the fine dining and bar menu options, with each offering a different but equally delightful experience. The fine dining menu stood out, delivering an array of sophisticated flavors and beautifully presented dishes. Breakfast was equally impressive, cooked to order and served with care. The food quality was excellent and worth the price, making each meal a highlight of the stay.

Value for Money: 9/10

“A luxury experience that justifies the price with unique charm and top-tier service.”

Castle Leslie offers great value for a luxury experience, especially when you consider its unique setting, top-notch food, and specialized offerings. While the property is a bit pricier than more conventional hotels, the price reflects the exceptional quality of the stay, from the personal service to the breathtaking location. For a memorable escape in a tranquil, equestrian paradise, the value is certainly there.

Unique Selling Point (USP):

“An equestrian haven set within a period property that offers a one-of-a-kind escape.”

Castle Leslie’s combination of historical charm and its focus on equestrian activities truly sets it apart. The chance to stay in a period property right next to the stables, along with the beauty of the estate, makes for an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re a horse lover or simply someone looking for a tranquil, luxurious retreat, this hotel stands out as one of the most unique in Ireland.
